The Houghton Lake Community Schools Board of Education is seeking a superintendent to begin work July 1, 2018.  The Board is being assisted in the search by Dr. Rodney Green, Consultant for Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB).  This posting is now open to all candidates.

Houghton Lake is located in the middle of Michigan's lower peninsula and surrounds Michigan's largest inland lake.  The district covers 550 square miles and is comprised of 12 townships. Residents and visitors greatly enjoy all forms of four season outdoor recreational and sporting activities.

The district serves approximately 1300 students, pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade, as well as an alternative education program, in four school buildings.  Houghton Lake has a caring and committed staff.  Student success, social development and academic achievement are primary goals of all staff.

A source of pride is that Houghton Lake Community Schools has been recently recognized for two prestigious academic awards.  The Mackinac Center report card gave Collins Elementary and Houghton Lake Middle School a Context and Performance score of A.  In addition, Houghton Lake High School was awarded a Silver medal by U.S. News and World Report as one of the best high schools in the nation. Currently, HLCS is a Blueprint District through Mi Excel.

The Board is seeking a superintendent who is a strong leader with excellent financial skills and a solid background in curriculum and technology.  The superintendent should be an effective communicator with staff and community, actively work with the Board and community to set and reach goals, and be a creative problem solver.  This educational leader should be ethical, honest and friendly.

Salary and Contract Information

The district will offer a competitive wage and benefit package (salary range $105,000 to $115,000) that reflects the experience and education of the candidate chosen as the next superintendent.

The Houghton Lake Community School District is seeking a strong, collaborative leader to work with the board, staff, and community to create a successful educational experience for all students. The Board of Education has identified the following criteria for selecting its next superintendent:

  • Possesses a strong background in PreK-12 education, administration, and instruction
  • Proven experience with finance and effective budget management
  • Record of success in past positions including improving achievement for all students
  • Uses data driven strategies in decision-making processes and curriculum development
